Once upon a time, wanton noodles was dominated by Fei Fei at Joo Chiat.
Eng's was known as second best, with chilli described as canon powder, hits you hard and blows your senses away.
I was once a Fei Fei diehard but no longer after numerous embarrassing failed attempts. The last straw came when I brought R there, painting the noodles as "the best" but only to be smacked right in the face with limp clumpy and bland noodles.
The parents have long switched camps to Eng's.
Starts from $2.50 per plate, comes with a side saucer of their signature chilli sauce. A dip of chilli sauce was exhilarating, as if somethings never change. The same tongue freeze. Lean char siew slices, greens, slurp worthy wantons and oodles of springy noodles. Eng's seems to have modelled their noodles after the QQ Korean noodles, only better! The portions are good enough for one but the oil could signal an indigestion for the smaller appetites.
I could not resist a side of wanton soup. Hearty goodness.
Eng's, you've got a family of fans, especially so when calories are thrown out of the window for the meal.
