Peach Blossoms 2 @ Marina Mandarin

Celebrated the Mom's birthday at Peach Blossoms and made reservations for the dinner. The restaurant was empty on a Friday night and remained so all the way till we left. As a customer, I take it two ways;

Either the food is no good.

Or, the hotel only caters to residential guests.

By and large, the explanation given by the F&B Manager on duty was the tourist crowd usually comes in after a jumbo flight and the crowd is hard to predict.

I dig the peach blossom embroidery on the napkin...such a sucker for such details!

The table adornment that somehow caught my attention.

Appetizers of pickles ($3).

All things chinese.

Eating as if we booked the entire place.

I must have been charmed by the table setting...

Appetizer of Wasabi Mayonnaise Prawns ($32). I remember this to be outstanding and true enough, it was. The portion was good enough for a prawn and a half each..for an appetizer it certainly wowed. The prawns were fried till crispy but retaining the chewy texture, coated with a tangy wasabi mayo sauce and sprinkled generously with fish roe. All these added up to a delightful display of flavours.

Roasted Chicken ($20) that was bland and too oily. Certainly does not qualify as coming from the hotel kitchen.

The original intent was for honeyed spare ribs but we made the switch to Sweet and Sour Spare Ribs ($24) because of the fried mantous that came with it. The Manager pre-warned us that this would be on the soft side but assured that it was equally popular.

As expected, this was soft to bite and the dish was lacking a certain character with all the sweet-sour gravy drenching it. Not a clear favourite for one who loves the meat slightly tough.

The reason for making the wrong choice! They turned out good though! Piping hot and chewy.

Handmade Noodle ($24) was a recommended dish and within the first few bites, I was blown away. The springyness of the noodles was addictive but beyond those few bites, the oil taste got a little too much. By the end of the dish, I felt nothing but jelard.

We should really stop letting hunger and food portions take the lead when it comes to ordering food. All these while, the portions were smaller than average and that fuelled the next order; Lobster Fried Rice ($32).

One wholesome dish with all the seafood generously strewn all over but once again, the control of oil should be made. The fried shrimp was tasty and a good replacement of fried shallots.

The family did not overly enjoy the dinner, so much so we gave dessert a miss. It was probably the dishes we opted for that did not harmonize. Service was hit and go, the waitresses were actually in a corner speaking in hushed tones. Quality of food is moderate, not good enough to warrant a second visit for ala carte.
