Paul @ Xin Tian Di, Shanghai

Paul in Shanghai is known for their baguettes and was listed as Top 50 must eats in Shanghai. By the time I found Xin Tian Di, the plain baguettes were all sold out, save for those stuffed with cured meats and cheeses. It is located right at the entrance of charming Xin Tian Di, the equivalent of our Clarke Quay minus the nostalgic historic feel. Paul was packed to the brim with expats inside and outside this small eatery.

Thank goodness they still had macarons left and I nabbed the last box.

The flimsy paper box with an equally flimsy paperbag.

6 minis!

6 Mini Macarons (CNY 58)

These are shaped slightly bigger than a 50 cent coin and in such lovely pastels. I had a fieldtime stacking them for photography but none of which turned out that pretty. The shells are slightly on the crunchy side (but the hard shells could withstand the harsh journey back home!) which I did not mind too much, the major selling point lies in the not too sweet creamy fillings. Within the box was Pistachio, Lemon, Strawberry, Almond, Chocolate and Vanilla, I found Almond exceptionally fragrant.

These are not like Canele's chewy but at least not as sweet! One tough fight.

  1. I miss the macaroons from Paul. Many good places to check out in Shanghai (not sure if you're still there), for starters:

    Spanish - Azul
Japanese - Kagen (all you can eat and drink teppanyaki - to die for)

    Have fun!
