A malay colleague declared this "The best Malay Kueh Tutu" and continued to add "it's way better than chinese kueh tutu". It used to be at Banquet but has since moved to "Mr Teh Tarik Kopi Tiam". The first visit was fruitless because it only opens at 11am!
Not much of a queue on a Sunday afternoon, a group of malay ladies were preparing the Putu piring, spooning the flour into the mould, steaming it, packing and then handing it over to the customer. They are already pre-packed into a nicely wrapped banana leaf, resembling a mini nasi lemak packet.
Piping hot, finger scalding.
They're soft and moist. A bite into it reveals molten gula melaka with a pebble of solidified gula melaka in the midst. It's quite a messy affair eating, I feared the gula melaka would solidify too quickly and also tried eating it with the coconut flakes that came with it so I ended up eating with my hands. The kuehs tend to stick together too. The texture of the putu piring is looser than our usual kueh tutu. Kueh Tutu's firmer and more of cake and has more choices in terms of filling.
Overall a treat but it has not toppled the crown from Kueh Tutu.
3 for $1.
