Finally stepped foot on Tampines 1! One of the first few things I did was to survey the area for the highly publicised food gems.
Rows of the infamous fruit tarts, they had them plastic-ised (if there's such a word!) but they look equally droolicious. I had a hard time deciding which tart, all look equally tall, creamy and must-try.
Bright yellow box!
Headed for the Strawberry Mont Blanc, a new addition over the equally delicious looking banana flan or grapefruit-orange. Strawberries are in season now...throw in my favourite Mont Blanc, sounds like a potential sell out combination.
Now, for the brute truth about it. The tart base is crunchy, but the disappointing bit set in when the tart does not cover the entire dessert, just partial. On top there's a layer of custard which was a wobbly delight. Thereafter was plain ordinary; whipped cream with strawberries beneath another mass of clotted cream AND finally the chestnut cream swirls that gives this the "Mont Blanc" finish. Unimpressive, overall. The clotted cream is an overload and is basically tasteless.
Strawberry Mont Blanc ($7.50)
Takeaway ($0.50)
All in, I ended up paying an incredible auspicious $8.88 for a slice. It's a once-off try and certainly no seconds. Fruit paradise? The tart's closer to paradise than the fruits, I say.
