Swiss Cafe @ Swissotel

The date with the bankers was at Cafe Swiss, an upmarket eatery in Raffles City that none of us have attempted. Huge area it's got, nice view to boot!

My favourite white plate and bread knife. I've got a weakness for white plates. :P

The juices.

Complimentary bread basket

Bread was served cold, just okay.

Pan seared Goose liver with Calvados Apple and toasted brioche ($24)

Very disappointing. My first attempt at goose liver as well. It tasted smooth, but had a tofu texture, wasn't quite the creamy, hard on the outside, soft on the inside texture I was looking forward to. The apples, nut sauce and some other sour sauce just didn't blend in that well.

Capellini with pan-seared Prawns, tomato concasse and saffron foam ($22)

Three tasty prawns with foam. My first attempt at foam..it's not as airy as expected, gave the dish a nice edge. With the cubed tomatoes, the foam tasted quite good. The capellini's much like angel hair pasta, tossed in some green gravy, delicious start.

Roasted Lamb Rack on Rich Barolo Jus, grilled vegetables and potato gratin ($32)

I had mine medium well, came in a nice shade of pink. Tender towards the bone, but started off slightly tough. The potato gratin was creamy and soft. I took a bite of the sprig of green, surprisingly crunchy! It was lightly salted too.

Oven Roasted Beef Tenderloin on Rosemary Jus with Root Vegetables ($32)

Tender as well, the meat was juicy. The accompanying salad was mainly made of chestnuts.

Chocolate cake with apricot compote ($12)

The chocolate cake's slightly bitter and dense, apricot's slightly sour.

Carrot cake with sour cream ice-cream ($12)

The sour cream on top of the carrot cake baffled me. Tasteless blob of solidified cream on top a dense carrot cake, very unlike those that I've tried. No raisins nor cinnamon in sight.

Service is inexplicably bad, to say the least. We weren't the only ones who left with a bad impression of the service.

Some examples of intolerable service glitches;
  • The staff were confused internally as to how the credit card promotion works.
  • When my other friends came later, the waiter looked at me and asked "Would you like to translate to your friends?" Translate??? Shouldn't it be your job?
  • Bread was served cold.
  • Taking eternity for the appetizers, mains and finally dessert to arrive. Averagely at least 15 minutes waiting time in between, so you'd expect to wait up to 45 minutes for a 3 course meal.
  • Upon receiving feedback from us, the waiter simply stared back at me as if I made the most unforgivable remark ever.
  • Taking forever and two waiters to comb the entire restaurant for 4 dessert menus.
  • Choosing to reply to my hurrying of the dessert from afar, almost shouting, mind you.
  • Throughout the entire course of dinner, it's most painful getting the attention of any waiter at all. All seemed busy with the register, the water jugs, looking elsewhere but at the diners. The place wasn't even half filled, not even 10%! At best 20 odd people?
I'll give them credit for the brilliant job done for the lamb rack and capellini with tiger prawns. It's slightly baffling as to what kind of cuisine Cafe Swiss serves. No cheese fondue, raclette or pork sausages were made available. The menu's limited to a page for appetizers, soup and mains. With decent food and terrible service...Cafe Swiss has to buck up. At this rate, no amount of promotions can save it.
