This Ham Jin Pang at Maxwell Market is a childhood snack. I remember visiting Maxwell Market way before it was renovated...memories of an old man and his daughter kneading dough with a pinch of red bean paste, tossing them into a boiling pot of oil and there'll be a string of people queuing to fry their ham jin pangs the size of 50 cent coins. Back then it was ten cents each.

I was thrilled to find it open over lunch, the lady was tottering around even at 1pm. 6 for a dollar! Each fried to a crisp, you've got a choice of sweet or salty.

I stuck to sweet. It's basically like the butterfly dough fritter but in a flat round form, 3cm in diameter, a bite into and I'm sold. The way it should be! Very chewy, the sesame seeds gives it the added fragrance, the red bean paste is as puny as can be but I'm not complaining. You can opt for it to be dusted in icing powder! This is one fried snack that I probably cannot stop once I start. The best part? It's not oily at all! At least the paper bag wasn't oil stained. Super duper yummy, a must buy the next visit!
The main hygiene grouse? She was using her dough stained hands to knead the dough, fry, pack your order AND collect the money. I figure..I can live with that bit of unhygienic conditions...
