Sin Swee Kee Restaurant @ Kitchener Road

Somewhere down the line of historical food moments before the whole "which dish is uniquely Singaporean or Malaysian or Indonesian" came about, there was a chicken rice war. Hawkers tried to out price each other going as low as $1 for a plate. I'm not sure if it's still around though the last attempt was made in 2008.

Two decades ago, Swee Kee at North Bridge Road was a sensation.
Two decades later, Swee Kee has long since shut its doors and several others laying claim to the authentic have sprouted out.

When I chanced upon the $2.20 Chicken rice promotion, memories of the price war was evoked.

Pricing has its funny ways of manipulating the minds, as much as I hate to admit...a price tag ending with 99 cents seems more appealing than .00. Same goes for $2.20 coupled with a screaming banner that stated the validity "Till 31 dec 09" caused much upheaval in the mind.

Truth be told, I was not expecting much.

Adoring the chinese calligraphy...

You have a choice of Roast or Oily chicken. The latter proved much oilier than the former.

11 slices of tender chicken with moderate thickness sits comfortably on a bowl of well-oiled rice grains. Depending on which part the rice was scooped up from, the rice was either too soft or fluffy. I figure kampung chicken has changed the stakes of the chicken game, I no longer like my feathery friend tender without a bite. Hence, Sin Swee Kee's was too soft for my liking. For $2.20 (originally priced at $3.50), it is a steal however.

More oily soup to wash the oil?

I shall give extra mention to the condiments. Green mild tasting ginger paste, spicy chilli sauce and sweet dark sauce gives me much reason to rejoice. Not many can master a good ginger paste, Sin Swee Kee's one of those.
