Muthu's Curry @ Suntec City

I didn't know about Muthu's offering both North and South Indian cuisines. Some background info courtesy of Wikipedia;

North Indian cuisine is distinguished by the proportionally high use of diary products; milk, paneer, ghee (clarified butter), and yoghurt (yogurt, yoghourt) are all common ingredients.

South Indian cuisine is distinguished by a greater emphasis on rice as the staple grain, the ubiquity of sambar and rasam (also called saaru and rasa), a variety of pickles, and the liberal use of coconut and particularly coconut oil and curry leaves. In South India, a cleaned banana leaf is often used as a hygenic and visually interesting alternative to plates.

Their signature orange bound menus

What's an indian meal without the banana leaf?

Interior..there's an open concept kitchen to view the making of your meal, literally. The charring of kebabs, flipping of naan...

The surprisingly good pompadum which we had 2 baskets of! I'm not a fan of it, but Muthu's is light, crispy and very tasty.

South Indian

Mutton Curry, $8 (Mutton in thick gravy made from ginger, garlic and aromatic spices)

It's thick, flavourful and the mutton pieces are chewy. I prefer this to the butter chicken. Dipping the Naan in it was rather nice.

North Indian

Murgh Makhni, $10 (Butter Chicken), Barbequed chicken pieces in rich gravy topped with a dash of cream and home churned butter

I first tried it at Chat Masala's...Muthu's take on butter chicken is just....okay. Basically a light and not spicy curry with chicken pieces that didn't have much of a bite. Not my favourite.

Assorted Naan (Butter, Garlic, Tandoori Roll and Vegetable Kulcha), $12

In all honesty, I couldn't tell which is what and all pretty much tasted the same. Pasty and very bread like, not the chewy dough that I'd love. The butter naan had a yellow tint, the garlic had chopped garlic..tandoori roll looked like it's made of wheat flour, the vegetable kulcha was stuffed with mashed potatoes. Amazingly, they ALL tasted the same! We couldn't discern the difference.

Get what I mean? That's the vegetable kulcha on the right.

Hmm..food...somehow disappointed..the service was just o-k-a-y. Not sure if we should've tried their award-winning fish head curry...of those I tried, they lacked something stellar to make the meal worth remembering. At least, I know that South Indian food is more my cuppa tea than North!
