The birthday girl wanted ambience and good steak, Hog's Breath was on the list of to-gos because it fulfilled both criteria. Reservation of 5 was made but was unnecessary since the Vivocity outlet was largely unoccupied at 6ish and remained that way when we left a good 3 hours later.
The table we were given was by the "shed" with bacon like strips as tables and seats that could only take half our butts, made sitting quite an uncomfy experience.
Ravenous as we were whilst waiting, we shared a signature appetizer;
A sampler plate of potato skins with dollops of thick mayonnaise and bacon, sweet buffalo wings, crumbed chicken tenders, salt and pepper dusted calamari served with a duo of dipping sauces, Lime Sweet chili sauce and Hog’s Breath Honey Mustard. Personally liked the honey mustard that tasted more cheese than mustard. I kept dipping every appetizer in it.
The potato skins are delish! Maybe I was overly hungry.
Buffalo wings were drenched in sweet sauce but the meat was tasteless.Chicken tenders...bland and dry.
Grilled Steak Sandwich $17.50
A visual delight, it was served looking like something you'd get from a carnival with shiny paper adorning the toothpicks. Two large toasted sandwiches with grilled steak (medium), cheese, beetroot slices, tomato and grilled onions too! The Hickory BBQ sauce was thankfully yummy. It came with the famous Hog Tail french fries that are basically curly fries.
A first for me, given my usual choice of Cheese Burger in Paradise. I actually liked their steaks! Tender and juicy, flavourful to boot. Enjoyed every crumb in fact. I lived to suffer later on, the MSG was overpowering and I had to down mugs of water and slices of papaya to wash down the heavy seasoning.
Fish & Chips $22.50
Beer battered fish fillets served with salad, Hog Tail Fries and tartar sauce. Nothing remarkable.
Garlic Mushroom Prime Rib Lite Cut $28.50
Seared over hot flames and topped with flash fried garlic mushrooms.
Blackened Prime Rib Lite Cut $27.00
Seared with Hog’s Breath Blacken seasoning, a light Cajun flavour.
The carnivorous girl pals enjoyed their steaks muchly. Didn't get to nab a bite but I'm sure they were as good as my steak sandwich! We polished our plates clean.Mississippi Mud Cake (On the house)
A thick slab of chocolate cake daintily accompanied by vanilla ice-cream. They could not finish the cake, I figure it's not that fabulous. The ice-cream was just normal.
Food was good, in fact better than all the times I've patronised Hog's Breath. They're better for the steaks than minced beef dishes or even non-beef for that matter. Ambience was highly average given our seats we could not see a thing of the picturesque view that Vivocity boasts of.
And now, for service..which I'm highly disappointed with. You've been warned, lengthy complaint ahead...[flash alarm signals]
#1 We made a reservation in the name of "celebrating a pal's birthday". The waiter came and asked in a straight face "so you are celebrating someone's birthday?" Not once, but TWICE. The second time after the plates were cleared and we already ordered the dessert. "Oh, so this is the cake for the birthday girl?" If anyone actually planned a proposal of some form, I'm terribly sure Hog's Breath would twart the plans to the max and ruin the mood for all. We all pretended to be surprised when the birthday mudpie came, including the birthday girl.
#2 It could've been due to inexperience of the staff/the staff is a newbie, she took our orders only to have someone else come along moments later to repeat the orders once again! The same thing happened with the dessert.
#3 When asked if there's any preferred cards, she answered with a confident "No" only to be rebuffed by her colleague. :S Thank goodness he was listening in, it'd be a good 15% we'd missed out on!
Service glitches they have to work on, otherwise, food is still worth a second visit!
