One of those random meetups just because we haven't hung out in a loooong while! Was supposed to meet BH and WL but BH was tied up till late. Anyways, headed to Canele to fulfill the curiosity of the much talked about dessert "IT" place.
Relatively crowded on a weekday night, okay, the eve of a public holiday. The manager was nice to get us to our seat, pass us the menus and then whisk off to handle the crowd. It's kinda weird that their cakes and pastries are not part of the menu and I had to go out to the dessert counter outside the shop to have a look at them. A service gap? [My marketing background didn't fail me! ]
Settled on...
Macaroons; Violette, Pistache, $2.30 each

With such eye-catching yummy colours, each of them looks too pretty to munch. At $2.30 per pop, it is on the high side, the macaroons are quite different from those by Bakerzin. At least it's hard on the outside, soft on the inside with a chewy cream. Couldn't quite tell the difference between Pistachio and Violette, in all honesty. Just mouthfuls of sugar.

It's basically a "baked sour cherry crumble tart with tender almond cream filling." which had icing sugar dusted atop. The pastry was a little dry, the almond cream did not quite compliment the tart though. Felt that Coffeebean can do a meaner job than Canele.
The Italian classic, made with marsala mascarpone mousse, finger sponge soaked in coffee, white rum and brandy. Not the best I've eaten, too heavy on coffee I feel. The "canele" tag on the cake was "obviously inedible" according to WL which i insisted otherwise. Why do bakers bother putting stuff that's inedible on cakes?! The tag doesn't even fulfill the aesthetics to begin with.
Wl enjoyed her Earl Grey muchly, above all. Not quite sure the buzz and fuss about canele...maybe those I tried did not do much justice. Pity the strawberry shortcake I was eyeing was long gone. Maybe next time?
