Tonkichi @ Takashimaya

Walked past Tonkichi so many times...oohed and ahhed at the window displays...finally set foot on Katsu-land! Everything on the menu is breaded and fried...they don't have your regular japanese fare of sushi, sashimi...

They specialise in pork..specifically hire (pork fillet) and rosu (pork loin). The former being fine and tender, less aromatic and lesser fat. The latter being chewy, richer in aroma and just the right amount of fat. Wow..didn't know so much about pork-ology. Impressive I'd say about this premium pork!

Read reviews on Tonkichi lacking in service over weekends...so wasn't quite expecting premium service for a premium place like Tonkichi. It was slightly crowded on an early Sunday evening..service wasn't fabulous...I was asking her to recommend..whether curry or the regular fare would be good..and all the help I got was.."One has curry, the other doesn't."

Classy..white...very japanese.

Ice water that thankfully was on the house.

Chawanmushi ($3.50), very smooth, very tasty...yum!

Agedashi Katsu Set (Agedashi Tofu, Pork Loin, some special soup with generous chunks of radish, carrots and tofu) Found the soup extra yummy...Pork loin was in my opinion a lil too fatty, I'm not a huge fan of pork belly or rolls of fat btw.

Yokubari Set (Deep Fried prawns, pork fillet, oyster and crab croquette). Yummers, a good introduction to all the items on the rest of the menu! The prawns were crunchy, not heavily doused in bi-carbonate (thank goodness!) and fresh. Oyster was a pathetic one piece but I loved it. Crab croquette was but a creamy mixture of veggies. The star of it all, pork fillets (hire!). Just right in bite and crunch.

Between the hire and rosu, I prefer the hire. The fats don't appeal to me that much. The breaded crumbs are perfect...not too overcooked...some breaded meats are overcooked and taste too hard and sometimes spoils the meat. Tonkichi did exceptionally well in this aspect.

Overall a really delightful meal, I didn't know katsu can taste so delicious...what's the best part? It doesn't make you feel you ate a barrel of oil despite everything on the plate being deep fried (to perfection), if I may add. Well, you pay for quality don't you?

Definitely on the seconds list!
