Rich & Good Cake Shop @ Kandahar

I first knew about Rich & Good Cake Shop from the papers quite a while ago..thesundaytimes April 6 this year reiterated how good it is by naming it as one of the Top 50 yummiest cakes. During which I had the chance to try just one slice of the mango swiss roll, I was takenaback how good swissrolls can taste.

Early this week, I finally had a chance to check Rich & Good out! You bet, nobody walks out empty-handed, it's almost a crime to do that.

The humble store...it's interesting how they paint it blue, blue's not quite the colour that goes really well with food imo. Nonetheless, a very traditional peranakan feel to the place, given the intricate carvings.

On a weekday, lunch time...there's a small crowd!

Rows and rows of colourful swissrolls. Makes a really pretty sight.

Their signature durian swissroll. It's not filled with chockfuls of durian puree, rather woven into the cream, giving the roll a fragrant bite. I'm definitely not a durian lover, but I am just okay with this.

Kaya swissroll! I loveeed this. Soft, delicious and fluffy. Generous helpings of kaya. I can eat slice after slice in one seating.

Between the two, I preferred the kaya one better. For both, the ingredients are more generous towards the centre of the roll. After 5 good days in the fridge, it still tastes as good! One perfect tea-time snack, I say!

I had a go at the cempedak puffs at the shop. It was more custard than cempedak, but the pastry was yummy. Not a must-eat but a good-to-try.

Price-wise, it definitely isn't your value-for-money kind of swiss roll like those you find in hypermarts or bargain corners. It is worth the price they're commanding, each roll is about 30cm in length, 4cm in diameter.

$6.50 per roll for Mango, Durian, Kaya.
$6 per roll for Blueberry, Strawberry.
$5.50 per roll for chocolate, coffee.
$3.50 per box of 6 cempedak/durian puffs

  1. Heard about it..went to the shop happily planned to buy two or more for weekends.
Realised the worst cake shop I ever patronised. Service is poor, staff attitude reluctantly want to service you just walked away when u asked for the items u want. Just because business is good doesnt mean u have to behave in that way. Just a small little oldiest shop thinking to make BIG. Will not survive long with this kind of service quality. Am sure there are better one in other part of the cities even u have to pay more. Should not call Rich & Good. Should call Sour & Bad Mini Shop!!!
