I shall be honest and upfront that I really don't quite know the differences between my muffins and cupcakes. Apart from...Marmalade Pantry Cupcakes and Chocolat N Spice Muffins. That's how pathetically I differentiate them.
I first knew of Chocolat N Spice back in 2005 and then the muffins were HUGE. You'd ponder how the gargantuan of flour filled with ingredients could be stomached...
Cupcake;

Muffin;

I reckon the dictionary meaning to it doesn't quite make a really clear distinction apart from muffins being more like bread and cupcakes, cake.
My Muffin affair was renewed when I sunk my teeth into a blueberry cupcake from Beccarino. I first heard of Beccarino during CNY this year, they're known for their crunchy cookies.
In the Tanjong Pagar region, there's probably one famous cupcake/muffin that everyone knows...Chocolat N Spice that overshadows and outsells any other dessert in the area. The queues are ever so long, it's hardly open without a queue. That's how good their sales are. Comparatively, Baccarino's hardly crowded, they have been featured on TV for their durian cream muffins. Both have their followings, I'm sure.
Had a chance to taste the blueberry muffin from Baccarino and made sure I had the same at Chocolat N Spice.

It's bigger than the Chocolat N Spice ones but taste-wise, it isn't as fluffy nor as fragrant. One reason could be...Beccarino's muffins are really muffins because they taste nearly quite like bread, but Chocolat N Spice ones are more like cake. *shrugs* If that were the case, Chocolat N Spice ones are cupcakes and not muffins!
Confusing it is, over what is what...but one thing for sure..the Chocolat N Spice ones have been shrinking over the years!
Both are decent desserts but surely, I'm still a diehard Chocolat N Spice fan. On a separate note, Chocolat N Spice sells other desserts as well like peach flan (more of a peach cake imo), cheesecakes and brownies. Beccarino too, actually. They've got cookies, cakes, donuts, cupcakes with icing and muffins.
