CBD Food Trail: Fish Soup

Mention fish soup and I actually did not realise how many fish soup stalls there are within CBD itself! Clearly this post took way longer to write than intended, here's the chowdown!

Prices are steep here, for fish soup itself it starts from $7 and fish and prawn, $10.

The longest queue for fish soup goes to Han Kee and second longest Piao Ji. While the numbers are not so ridiculously large the waiting time is thereabout. I guess for that precious bowl of goodness, waiting is a prerequisite.

The broth is robust and very rich, a result of hours of simmering to extract all the goodness. The only downside to this is, the portion of ingredients is measy. 3 crunchy prawns, 5 slivers of fish, a handful of greens and fried shallots. For the record I do not usually eat fried shallots but these were good enough for me to lap them all up.

Han Kee

Fish soups start at $5, $7 and $10 and with fish head, there is a supplement of $2 per size.

Expect a queue of at least 30 people no matter what time you start queueing over lunch but take heart it moves rather quickly and bless the memory of  the two lady servers who go around collecting orders and money by tens of customers at once and every single order is not missed out.

I opted for the medium portion going at $7, thick slices of fish in a clear broth heavily laced with MSG. Delicious and huge portion of fish, the ideal bowl would be to combine their portions and Han Piao Ji's soup!

Located on the first floor, the queue is nowhere near the second floor heavy weights though the waiting time is not alot shorter than the other two big names. Clear soup with mixed fish slices and vegetables, there is an option to include their famous handmade meatballs too.

No Milk Fish Soup
Clifford Centre

I made a booboo at this place asking for milk to be added to my soup when they clearly stated in their neon signage "no milk". $6 gets me mixed fish and with a top up of $2, I get fried fish roe, fish milt or ngor hiang.

The portions are on the daintier side and even with a top up of fish ($1-3), I thought it was still not generous enough. The queue time to purchase is short, the wait time for the food to arrive was way longer. That said, this comes with air conditoning and note that only the seats in the stall itself are reserved for their customers, not those outside!

Hup Lee Cafeteria Fish Soup
The Arcade, 11 Collyer Quay,  #01-35/36

The first time I had this years back I was not impressed but this time round I got so hooked I have been having this weekly - rain or shine and soaking in perspiration too. The lengths I go just for good food - tsk.

There are two separate queues for takeaways and dine in but customers still use both!

Mixed fish with milk ($6) comes with sour vegetables, tofu, vegetables and thick fish slices. So much win and this is probably the most satisfying of them all. The first time I ordered it they forgot about my fried fish, the lady simply dished out two fish slices and got them replaced hence they still look so crisp!

The second and obviously more soaked version.

China Square Blanco Court Fried Fish Soup
Tanjong Pagar Xchange

Prices have taken a hike for the double fish soup from $6 to now $7. I've not tried the original stall so I can only comment on past experiences with this same stall - major points for air conditioning, short queueing time and your food is served almost immediately after ordering. Seating places are also ample but the freshness of the fish is inconsistent.

Chai's
One Raffles Place Food Court

I definitely adjusted my expectations for Chai's - a huge fishsoup franchise in most food courts. For $7, pictures illustrated a mixed fish soup in a warmer and well I certainly did not get any of that. Milk was really thin and so were the fish slices. Fried egg was equally dismal as well. Meh.
