The Humble Loaf @ Katong Shopping Center

DSC_0232

The Humble Loaf at Katong Shopping Center is the new IT kid on the bread block. With the growing number of bakeries, it seems to me we have gone down the slippery road of baked goods with much vengeance and appetite.

Located next to Donna Manis is this cafe that sticks out like a sore thumb - especially so when all I ever know about the Shopping Center is banana pie, maids agencies, Teo Heng KTV and tuition centers.

Counter temptations.

Latte ($4.50)

The standard these days for lattes is the art that the barrista is capable of and while this was simple and nothing 3-dimensional, the coffee addicts thought it decent for a small hole in wall place.

Ginger Lemon Tea ($4.50)

A dash of sugar would make this tummy warming beverage really nice on a wet day.

Homemade Raspberry Lemonade ($4.50)

More of raspberry juice than lemonade but it was an awakening drink in its sourness.

Herring Caviar and Truffled Egg Bruschetta ($6.50)

Caviar bruschetta at less than 4 buckeroos a slice, it has to be the cheapest caviar anything in Singapore. This was a milder flavoured sandwich as compared to the rest of the other items I tried, yet blissful bites this was made of.

Croque Monsieur ($6)

A first that my croque monsieur arrived looking less of sinful and overladen - simply ham and cheese which made the others taste so far off.  One has to be a cheese lover to fully appreciate the works.

Jamon Serrano ($9.50)

Perhaps the least favourite of the lot but terribly value for money with the unctuous greasy slices of jamon ham that makes this up a notch kind of sinful.

Hokkaido Sea Scallops with a Herbal Mornay Sauce on Toast ($12.50)

The reason for this visit - bread plumped with scallops and sauce which I mistook for cheese. I would trade rice for this sandwich alone, bouncy scallops and a sauce with flavours so well balanced. I wondered out loud - blimey! Scallops could taste this good outside Hokkaido.

Raspberry Bar ($2)

Packed with enough raspberries to stain my teeth and the crumble was a delightful mess.

Salted Lemon Pound ($2)

Salt got me for this order. A citrusy pound cake with occasional salt rocks - loved the cake texture.

I am in love with The Humble Loaf, almost personifying it as a love interest. We had the luck to try 3 types of bread - bamboo charcoal (only available on weekends), multigrain and then another type that I sincerely forgot what. Yet all three were crazily outstanding and hard to delegate love for.

Yes I split the secret on my new found favourite cafe. Instagram says they are usually sold out on bread first before everything else and have closed their shutters way before the official hours. Will you please then not buy up all their loaves and cakes the next time you visit?
