Penny University has eluded me so many times with their tricky closing times that I almost gave up visiting it completely. 6pm their shutters come down on weekdays and friendlier timings over weekends.
I finally made enough time to pay them a visit one weekday afternoon.
A story about its origins.
A corner dedicated to the arty who make paper cups look chichi.
Something to take home?
The bane of this place is its tolerance towards
Before you think it's a ghostly picture with me hovering in the reflection - it was deliberate. Windowsill pies are also stocked here - but fussy me prefers to head back to its flagship for a slice.
Environmentally friendly and cute table tag!
Long Black
Unimpressed the companion was and he likened it to being brewed with "rainwater" - as bad as that sounds drew unnecessary flak and cyber bullying on instagram. Not the bestest attempted I would say and somewhat not representative of the place.
Turkish Eggs ($8)
Poached eggs on lightly whipped yogurt, homemade spicy moroccan harissa sauce, oregano leaves
Smoked salmon ($3.8)
Is it me or are most brunch menus paying tribute to the Middle Eastern cuisine? Order only if you fancy chilled yogurt with your eggs. Nothing to fault since I did not fancy the combination in the first place. They claim this is signature so perhaps it appeals to someone's tastebuds.
Eggs Benedict with Smoked Salmon ($12)
An okay take on Eggs Benedict...runny eggs check, hollandaise sauce check..brioche bread check...it just did not stand out as THE one.
Smoked Chicken Breast, Maasdam Cheese, Chutney on Sourdough Toast ($8)
The sweet chutney overshadowed the other flavours of the toast.
French Apple Cake ($5.50)
Think custard and apple in a cake that turned out to be the best of the brunch.
Mediocre brunch attempt at Penny University - so what is the fuss?
