Hanamaru Sushi @ Stellar East, Sapporo

hana sushi

Conveyor belt sushi in Japan is a must-try, at least to see what is the major difference of dining in the country of origin. Hanamaru Sushi spots several outlets around town and each always has queues. Queues for this is regardless of hour and time, people seem to think that sushi is staple 247…like the craze surrounding bubble tea then. At its peak, waiting time goes up to 60 minutes.

queues

Mad queues.

60 in waiting

Yes, we waited for a good 45 minutes at least.

crowds

Interior of the restaurant.

colour coded

Concept is universally the same I suppose, pay according to the coloured plate taken. Prices range from 130 Yen and include a variety of sushis – mostly raw though.

more salmon

Salmon sushi for a start, possibly the first time eating it in Japan.

salmon

Seconds, a different price tag but I suppose it's a different cut.

sushi

Octopus.

torched salmon

Torched salmon to try!

soft shell crab

Crispy soft shell crab.

tamago

Tamago was really ordinary.

roe

A blanket of fish roe! Very interesting sight I must say to attempt plucking each from the main vine.

scallop

My favourite scallops, juicy and sweet!

tuna

The lightest shade of tuna.

spicy salmon

Not sure what this squishy thing is - one mouth and it all tastes about the same.

octopus

A chewy shellfish.

shellfish

Yet another chewy arkshell.

uni

Always a must eat but this was really ordinary, somewhat metallic in fact.

tuna

Minced tuna.

tuna

In maki roll form.

sushi

A crunchy one but nobody figured out what it is.

salad

Boring salad sticks.

soup

Fish soup!

fruits

Even in a sushi joint, we could not bear to pay SGD3 for a bowl of fruit.

I’d say sushi was not totally fresh and the best eaten but it was decent. Reasonably cheaper than the run of the mill sakae and ichiban equivalents here but it’s just it. Overhyped and overcrowded.
