The usual suspects of Hongkong

gui lingao

Gui Lin Gao, Hoi Tin Tong

I can count on it for all the heaty food I'd be partaking in yummyland. Bitter and thick with herbs.

charcoal cake

Charcoal sponge, Kee Wah (HKD 5)

These are priced cheaper at their non airport outlets. Lovely black sesame fragrance with a gritty texture – a sign that they grind their seeds! Pillowy soft sponge that is a hot favourite of mine! A pity the expiry dates are usually within 2 days of purchase, if not I’d gladly lug back a week’s worth!

napoleon

Napoleon, Kee Wah

This sponge cake french pastry combination did not quite work for me though individually they taste good.

tai cheong

Tai Cheong Egg tarts

egg tart

I had the luck to walk past three outlets but eat from two. The flagship store seems to have taken a facelift and even more crowded than before – I hope the HKD 5 price tag per egg tart stays! People were buying egg tarts by the boxes whilst I could sheepishly only manage one! Wobbly, buttery and divine…they seem to keep it on mark every visit.

For tourists who still want a bite of it can pick up some at Kowloon station. This outlet has two variations of the egg tart – cookie and pastry base. I stuck with the cookie base – the buttery fragrance was too hard to miss. Custard was too sweet here and there seemed to be too much butter mixed in. Somewhat lacking in QC at a different outlet.

sugar cookie

At three for HKD 100, I lugged back some to nibble. These sugar dusted danish cookies were buttery yet light. Perfect tea time companion.

egg rolls

These light seaweed rolls were equally delightful.

lotus paste wife biscuit

Wife's Biscuit in Lotus Paste, Wing Wah

A love hate relationship with Wife's biscuit...and only had luck with Wing Wah for this touristy must buy.

kee wah

Pineapple Shortcake, Kee Wah

Still a favourite. YUM.

egg wafflet place

Wafflet, Jordan

yum

I always wish I have space for more of these street snacks. Crispy on the outside and chewy within...so goooood!

DSC_0262

Hongkong's answer to lok-lok. At HKD 8 a stick, these were selling at hotcakes with the promo of 3-for-2.

pick

Curry Fishballs, Argyle Center

snack

Chanced upon this lok-lok stall whilst shuffling with the crowds at least a generation younger (Boo!). Buy 1 get 1 free tactic always works regardless how the food tastes. The fishballs were fishy and too dense while the sausages were just alright.

black sesame sundae

Black sesame icecream, mcdonalds

Sundae doused in black sesame paste – a complete east meets west combination! Sundae was a tad too sweet but I loved the combination! How about orh nee next?

Can't wait for the next visit!
