Marmalade In The City @ Ion Orchard

I remember swearing off Marmalade Pantry not too long ago after consecutively bad experiences. Yet the food and beverage industry does get smaller every now and then - in particularly for consistently good food or mouth watering desserts. Finding variety is hardly rocket science, it is finding that particular one that stays perennially good.

Somehow or other, the gang ended up at Marmalade Pantry or renamed Marmalade In The City despite the initial attempts to go Chinese for the night. I suppose queues are always a factor to consider for group outings. Be too early and end up having to wait for the rest, or end up fashionably late and get dagger stared at my the snaking queues outside.

ceasar

Roast Chicken and Avocado Caesar with a Poached Egg ($22)

Caesar salad hardly goes wrong, neither did this. Loved the creamy avocadoes and well tossed salad. Poached egg was barely runny but for the ravenous, this was a flaw too minor to harp on. Loved the cheddar cheese bits shaved on top.

grilled veg salad

Chopped Grilled Vegetable Salad ($21)
Butternut, Eggplant, Asaparagus, Sweetcorn, Peppers, Mesclun

In comparison, this was a lot more wholesome and meant for the strict vegetarians. Not too much a surprise, it is afterall a bowl of chopped grilled vegetables.

scrambled eggs sandwich

Scrambled Eggs and Sausages ($20)
Toast with Field Mushrooms

Did not attempt but the companion polished it off pronto. Says quite a bit, I reckon.

steak sandwich

Steak Sandwich ($24)
Wasabi Mayonnaise, Caramelized Onions and Rockets

Used to be one of my favourites and while this attempt did not totally redeem itself, it was above average good. The yam and potato chips were no longer crisp, hovering on chewy instead. Wasabi mayo could do with a bit more punch yet overall a decent steak sandwich.

burger

Beef Burger ($28)
Mushrooms Duxelle and Truffle Fries

Main selling point of this went to truffle fries but a pity these were served lukewarm. Just the right proportion of truffle oil on an otherwise tasty minced beef burger.

salmon and soba

Oriental Grilled King Salmon ($22)
Soba

One dark horse that took the longest to arrive. Portions of grilled king salmon varied across plates - at least one appeared to be more generous. Loved the crispy grilled layer that gave way to an Omega-3 packed salmon fillet. Soba was refreshing too, I am so ordering this the next visit!

crab linguine

Crabmeat Linguini ($24)
Pine Nuts, Tomato, Chilli

Huge portion of this but still as good. Pasta al dente with a generous tantalizing crabmeat base, slurp!

sticky date

Granny Smith and Stem Ginger Pudding ($13)
Salted Caramel Icecream

Typically a sticky date pudding fan but decided to go ginger. No regrets. Finally their famed pudding is back! Soft and moist huat kueh texture plumped with ginger shreds...literally a burst of ginger in my mouth as I bit into it. Granny Smith completely played second fiddle but I was sold by the salted caramel icecream - molten caramel drizzled as the fork prodded further. Double yums!

cheesecake

Seasalt Caramel Cheesecake ($8)

Dense cheesecake with lovely play on flavours, seasalt caramel is mild yet really pleasant.

cupcake

Kumquat Cupcake ($4.80)

To add to the festive cheer, they released kumquat cupcake for CNY! Macaron was too crumbly yet nailing the flavour to a T. Cupcake really moist - probably fresh off the oven that day. Not too sweet with the cream cheese frosting, I am so dying to head back for takeaways!

Inconsistency is Marmalade's greatest setback, this particular visit nailed it on all grounds for a return. Until then, it has redeemed itself reasonably. Service still depends on specific waiters but I am truly not complaining when it is one of those places without a queue!
