Amidst all the fancy eating, there has always been a corner of the stomach that favours Tze Char or back to basics food. I consider Tze Char, going back to basics. I count Sin Hoi Sai and Fatty Weng childhood friendly, though through the years and changing tastebuds have not seen me returning in the last few years.
A friend brought us there over lunch one day, proudly declaring his find as a 'gem'.
Golden Prawns with Butter and Pumpkin Cream
Deep fried till crispy with basil, the golden prawns are generously doused in sweet cream of butter and pumpkin. The combination itself tickles the salivary glands to no end. In fact, it was the first dish to be polished clean albeit the grease. Fresh prawns with an irresistible sauce to go, I'd never look at Tze Char the same way again.
Marmite Pork Ribs
Lean pork is used, hooray for that! Tasty, tasty, tasty.
Pork Knuckle
A local take on the German heavyweight. The skin's less crunchy, not recommended unless you do not mind slightly soggy skin. The meat is flavourful and less tough than the German version, more braised in my opinion. Overall, a less mean version of the German favourite.
Stir Fried Tofu with Seasonal Vegetables
Adore how tofu is soft and crispy at the same time.
They could do away with the limp vegetables as adornment for all dishes. Decent take on adding fusion elements into otherwise ordinary dishes. Worth a try!
