Rider's Cafe @ Fairways Drive

Make a guess where I'm headed...

Down the long and winding road with speed limits of 30km/hr.

Totally countryside...right?

The horses in Rider's Cafe at Saddle Club is what Ah Meng used to be for the Zoo. A crowd puller...except that, I barely saw one! The ride into Rider's was as if I walked into a chapter across the continent...a certain detachment from the local context. It felt somewhat country and away and I figure, that is the charm. Signs are up warning you about traipsing horses and roving monkeys.

Note that they are not open on Mondays.

It was crowded for a Saturday Mid-day meal with bawling kids, chattering girlfriends, boisterous groups of friends.

Seated right next to the horse stables!

To make this visit worthwhile, I saw a trotting white horse!

Salmon Benedict ($14)

It is true that when you have 10 people convincing you something is good, you'd believe so. I earnestly thought so when I ordered the Benedict. The foodie claimed it's "the best" and reviews online pointed in the same direction..and to set the egg record straight, I'm no huge fan of runny eggs. That proved to be a mistake from the start, or so it seemed.

Daffodil yellow runny yolks contrasted with stark white egg whites on a crimson orange smoked salmon cushion and finally a humble muffin. It scored marks on the colours used to put together such a highly sought after dish. The first bite was a determining point and alas, I ended up crestfallen. It was an unpleasant sour due to the Hollandaise sauce (Wiki says it's is an emulsion of butter and lemon juice or egg yolk.) The smoked salmon was well, savoury and the muffin was a shameful one to even start with. Dry and coarse..and as much as I hate to say, McMuffins are a better deal.

The pan fried potatoes that came with it and the cup of chopped fruits were the only saving grace.

Rider's Burger with cheese, bacon and onions ($14)

Ahhh, much better, way much much better. Portions wise, it was quite a hefty chunk. Served in two halves of toasted buns, one had the chunky beef patty with onions, bacon and cheese which was gently reminded by the waitress as "at no charge". The other was stacked with gherkins, onions, lettuce and tomato slices. The beef was flavoured with sodium and on the edge of being overcooked despite instructions on "medium". It was only towards the deep middle that a slight pink hue peeped out. The thick cut fries are yum, crispy on the outside, warm mush inside.

Pancakes were on the agenda but I decided to can the idea after the rough start. Service is polite with constant refills of warm water. The tables were wooden planked, chairs were not uniform across all tables. For this place, ambiance over-rules.
