The gang's caught the dimsum bug of late, following our Shang Palace escapade, here comes rendezvous at Li Bai Sheraton Towers Hotel. Sheraton's one of the lesser known hotels in Orchard but it boasts of outstanding restaurants like D.O.M.V, Li Bai and Lobby Lounge for High Tea.
Thanks to the friend who's a regular, we nabbed a private room!
Sealed in Jade, very chinese but I'm liking it!
The must haves. Sliced chilli padi that burns...so shiok!
Instead of steamed peanuts/roasted peanuts...Li Bai breaks the code with yam chips! These paper thin yam chips are highly addictive, chip after chip...it became plates.
Century Egg Congee ($5)
Grainy porridge peppered with MSG and generous scattering of salted pork cubes and century egg. I found it just alright.
Steamed Crystal Dumplings with Mixed Vegetables ($4.80 for 3)
Colourful blobs of deliciously chewy skin, the fillings are a delectable pumpkin, carrot, hairy melon, black fungus...wish I had more of this delicate dimsum!
Crispy Diced Cube of Roasted Pork ($8)
I guiltlessly indulged in this well roasted pork cubes, hardly a trace of fat (or they could have been well hidden with the skin and tendons), the outermost layer of crispy skin was barbequed to a delightful crunch. Already sounds good? With a dollop of mustard that is.
Stirfried Radish Cake with X.O. Chili Sauce ($6)
On the ordinary side, no burnt fragrance nor crispy edges as desired. Taste was normal, not at all spicy.
Steamed Rice Rolls with Char Siew ($6)
These rice rolls are stuffed with sliced char siew, a generous portion infact. The rice rolls are smooth to taste.
Steamed "Juicy Dumplings" with Pork and Crabmeat ($4.80 for 3)
I thought these Xiaolongbaos were pretty good, the skin was just right, the soup was tasty and I slurped it up greedily. It was until I relooked at the menu that I realised crabmeat was part of it...I don't remember tasting any of that though. Probably added to the sweetness of the soup within.
Steamed Chicken Dumplings with Conpoy ($6 for 4)
Different kind of siew mai...it was a gratifying experience. The tasty skin wrapped around chicken meat and topped with a fresh prawn. Sounds simple but all in, the simplicity tasted so good.
Fish Noodles with Prawns
The pals raved nonstop about this. Instead of lobster, we opted for its cheaper distant cousin, prawns! The prawns were halved and cooked to a lovely crimson. Fish noodles had the consistency of "fishcake tofu", or basically just fishcake. Oodles of smooth noodles they are. The gravy's quite a star on its own, wholesome gravy packed with goodness.
Baked Mini Egg Tarts ($3 for 3)
Not too impressed by these little pastry cups, just alright.
Fried Pancake with Red Bean
We initially ordered custard with ricerolls but those were not "prepared by the kitchen", so we had them replaced by red bean pancake. Fried to a honey brown, the red bean paste was piping hot...not too bad a way to end off the dimsum lunch!
Service is impeccable, glasses get filled up so very frequently. The waitress was kind enough to make suggestions. A couple of items like custard rice rolls and ginger tea were unavailable that day. Food wise, for dimsum lunch I am takenaback that regular favourites like har gao, char siew pau or tao sar pau..and my favourite Glutinous Rice were obviously missing. Not quite able to make a fair comparison to the other dimsum places thus but I'll credit them for the siew mai and fish noodles.
