Tonkichi 2 @ Shaw Centre

Back at Tonkichi! I've tried all three outlets at Isetan, Takashimaya and Suntec.
Isetan's outlet is seemingly more packed than the rest, judging from the "2-3" minutes wait that transformed magically into a near 20 minute wait. People throng to this place as bees were to honey, for some reason.

Prior visits had me sticking to their signature hire/rosu sets and I left satisfied; belly and soul.

Houji Cha and all the goodness.

Ramen, Chicken Katsu, Chicken Kakiage Set ($23)

You get a choice of ramen, side and katsu. The ramen looked and tasted "just like my maggi mee", quoted verbatim! Didn't give it a go, looks-wise..it looked like ramen but I guess it lacked the springy texture that ramen's supposed to have. The soup was spicy though. Chicken katsu was a disappointment, the meat was so cottony soft, you wonder if it's really meat.

Chef's Bento Set ($24)

Premium Deep fried pork loin, Unagi and rice, Japanese Omelette, Chicken Ball, Rice Noodle Set, Tonjiru, Dessert.

It arrived in grandeur, the myraid of colours..pretty! I wanted the best of all the worlds Tonkichi had to offer.

Chicken Balls, Fish cake, Tamago, Green Peas

The chicken balls reminded me of those from Tori-Q..just alright. The fishcake was chewy and tamago surprisingly not sweet.

Rice Noodle Set

Appetising flat noodles tosed in sesame oil and garnished with shredded vegetables. A nice start and served chilled!

Unagi with rice, pickles and egg

The unagi was slightly salty but otherwise tasted really good with rice and pickles.

Premium Deep fried pork loin

Previous attempts at Hire left me craving for more. The cuts for this was tough, oily, within each piece of katsu there was a layer of solified oil between the meat and the breaded crust. Where's the premium in this? It started out fine and ended on a bad note. The crispy crumbs couldn't save this, I ended up scraping off the crumbs and eating just the meat. Sheer disappointment because they've been proven so much better before.

Dessert

Three slices of watermelon. You can't quite go wrong with this.

Neither R nor I enjoyed this Tonkichi meal...just proves a point, stick to their signatures and nothing will go wrong. Bento sets serves as a double edged sword; it potentially can be a good showcase of what they're good at, or accentuate they're misses, which in this case is everything but Pork Tonkatsu (only Hire/Rosu). Service is decent on a weekend.
