The first visit at Kura No Naka for dinner was unforgettable. My first foray into authentic Japanese food, apart from the regular sushi-tempura-ramen. The sister company of Nanjya Monjya at Grand Copthorne.
Kura No Naka's decor is from the Edo period of Japan (from 1603 to about 1867) and its name means 'inside a traditional godown'.And the food served is 'izakaya' style - those you find from a restaurant patronised by salarymen. -- Taken off asiaone.
I dropped by for their value set lunches that have been publicised all over. There are quite a number of other restaurants that are baiting customers with $15 nett set lunches..I chose to top up $5 more for a better deal!
Up the stairs!
Very japanese settings with bamboo...wish we were given the seats upstairs though.
Funny how they use Nanjya sleeves..
Complimentary salad with every other. Leaves of cabbage with a slice of tomato and savoury sauce. An appetite whet-ter (if there's sucha word!)
Inari sushi that came with the udon set we ordered. This came warm, the sweet beancurd skin with a ball of soft sushi rice.
Zaru Soba Set ($15)
Found this ordinary.
A choice of soft drink/juices that comes with the set lunch. I went for grapefruit juice.
Chawanmushi that was silky soft! The chockfuls of ingredients are at the bottom. One of the best I've eaten, coming from a non-chawanmushi fan.
The weekly bento set ($20 nett) that changes every week! So many bowls and pockets of dishes...that's what I adore about bento sets.
Tempura items; Brinjal, Pumpkin, Prawn, Mushroom with a portion of marinated radish.
Well fried, not too oily. The prawn's not heavy on bi-carbonate, there was a certain sweetness to it. The same went for the vegetable items. Enjoyed this.
Sashimi selection; salmon and tuna.
Sliced thickly and tasted quite fresh.
Pork Belly stir fried with bean sprouts
Very tasty! A hidden gem in this bento set.
Chicken Katsu
The chicken was just alright, on the sweet side. It wasn't breaded to perfection, the breaded bits were falling off the chicken.
Cold Tofu and Preserved Lotus Root
Enjoyed both sides tremendously. Simple fare yet they tasted great. The lotus root was crunchy with a hint of sweet-sourishness.
To wrap it all up, complimentary ice-cream! Would've been ahhhsoooperfect had it been japanese ice-cream or mochi, but I'm not complaining!
Coffee/Tea too.
Very value for money I must reiterate. For such a wide spread of items, Kura No Naka impresses. The quality is certainly not lacking, service is on par too. Attentive service. For lunch, I say stick to their sets, ala carte's not worth it.
Seconds soon!
