Resto Surabaya @ Lucky Plaza

Lucky Plaza's not familiar ground for me at all, I only hurry pass it to catch a bus or to the underground linking to Takashimaya. It's always been a place for the foreigners to get a piece of hometown, for me. Hence my absolute surprise when the good friends suggested LP for dinner one weekend. Ayam penyat signboards are nearly quite all over LP at the entrance, so I roughly have an idea what it is all about. Resto Surabaya we went..! A cafe filled with diners, busy for a weekend. The waitress comes over with a pencil and sheet of paper to note your orders, what amuses me is with such a procedure in place, she still forgot our order.

Ayam Penyet Surabaya ($6)

Their signature. Comes with a fried chicken, I was told Ayam penyet means smashed chicken. Not sure how that has an impact on the taste but it tasted the same like any other fried chicken. Sprinkled with crumbs, it's served with soy bean cake and fried tofu and a serving of chilli paste on a lettuce. That's the bomb. The chilli paste is a blend of chilli padi and diced tomatoes. Yummilicious it is and unforgettable! A great appetite starter, goes well with the chicken and basically everything else.

Ayam Bakar ($6)

For the sake of choice, I went for the grilled chicken. Bad move. Comparatively, the portion's smaller and that's all you get! The chicken's too sweet.

Coconut Rice

Another failed daring attempt. The rice heavily infused with spices and herbs.

Tahu Telor

Very oily combination of eggs and toufu that wasn't quite evident. The peanut sauce was just alright.

Ice Coconut with Syrup ($3)

It arrived in a tall glass, filled with pink liquid and shredded coconut.
Too sweet for my liking.

I'll return just for their signature dish, sometimes it's better to play safe than be overly daring.
A welcoming find in Lucky Plaza.
