Off to The Queen & Mangosteen British Pub with lyn for my belated birthday treat (thanks!) after R refused to head there with me, insisting the portions will be bite-sized and not worth the while. Read on to see if his preconceived notion is true or not!
The uber cute and cool "royal wee"!
Royalty menus.
A choice of the cosy inside or sunny outside..
Our glasses of warm water had this "charcoal" fragrance which we initially mistook for a lingering coffee smell. I dig the coasters! The charcoal supposedly rids the water of impurities.
Nice thick napkins. What baffles me greatly is their cutlery, this joint is newly opened yet the cutlery's are kinda "rusted" or "bronzed".
Fish and Chips with Curry Tartare Sauce ($12)
We headed there mainly for this. Three fillets with a bucket of fries. Sea Bass coated with a coriander batter (seems very much like the one I tried at Double Bay), the flesh is chewier and firmer as compared to the normal dory filets.
Curry Tartare's probably the only thing that differentiates this from the usual tartare sauce..the curry hint isn't obvious. The batter's light and crispy though oily. For $12, it's one affordable fish & chips!
Mini Burgers & Chips ($16)
I had a go at this! Arrived in the same grandoise way, on a platter that fills nearly half the table.
Albeit bite-sized each patty is juicy and well charred. With a dollop of mayo and slice of tomato, the mini burgers are pretty well done!
Both lyn and I found the fries "neverending", we couldn't quite finish the bucket no matter how much we ate. The fries are dusted with salt, on its own still tasted a little too salty. I guess this is only good when you're having beer.
Service is decent and friendly. Most of the customers are foreigners, not surprisingly. We were too full thereafter to explore the dessert options...the fruit crumble and creme brulee sounds guiltily good! Overall, the fish & chips aren't that outstanding, the mini beef burgers outshone them. Nibbles these dishes are, but definitely more filling than the usual pub grub. Good enough for us ladies, not sure about the guys. Before we left, we caught sight of two guys tucking into 2 mains (lamb chops and bangers and mash), fish & chips and nachos with sauces. So R is half right about that.
