My first time venturing into Stamford House..the street's more known for its fashion gems than food. Somehow I like the whole architecture of the buildings.
Curry Favor it is! For casual Japanese curry...
Screaming red... paper table liners..
Leather bound menus.
Our shared appetizer of Age Cheese Chikuwa ($10/ 9 pcs), fishcake stuffed with cheese, breaded and fried and drizzled with a creamy sauce. That's what it is. Not quite the cheese appetizer I was anticipating..it could've been cheesier. It helped curb the hunger quite abit.
All main courses come with miso soup or green salad. The salad's simple yet whets the appetite greatly. Served chilled, the cucumber and tomato slices gave this salad an added crunch, the corn bites and shredded lettuce had a light tasty sauce poured over. I quite this.
My mains of Rosu Katsu & Hire Katsu Combo Set ($15.90). I'm a self-declared Tonkichi Hire fan but I decided to give both a go to be fair. The pork potions are just alright. I polished the small portion of preserved vegetable up greedily.
Upclose of the hire cutlet. Of the two, rosu's the tougher cut whilst hire's supposedly juicier. I found the katsus somewhat overfried, nary the juicy meat I was expecting. The rosu was tough imo.
Now, moving onto the curry sauce. I wouldn't quite call it "curry" per se..it tasted more like black pepper potato gravy with the consistency it came in. Lacked in spice despite ordering "spicy", for the benefit of the doubt, maybe that's what Japanese curry is all about. Waraku's take on curry's much better. On its own, the gravy tasted good with the rice.
Foodwise, nothing to shout about. It's just fried food with gravy that tastes good with rice. Service depends on the server. We had a couple serving us and there was a particular server who arrived with two dishes and got quite irritated when we didn't get her the first time she announced the dishes. In a group of 15 it's quite hard to hear who's saying what and well, the signs of annoyance were written all over her face when she finally linked the dish to the person.
Not too sure if I'd do a double take on this place.
