Chinese New Year Edition - 1

Hot on the heels of christmas is chinese new year...which spells more goodies, more calories...more sin..!

Garden Pastry & Cake

Prawn Rolls, $13.20 (after less 10%), Large

The prawnrolls come in two sizes, small and large. Economically speaking, the large makes more sense. The prawnrolls are crispy, not too oily...once again, not as spicy as desired.

Peanut Puffs, $13.20 (after less 10%)

Chanced upon it at the Taka food square, galore of CNY goodies of all forms, shapes, sizes and tastes as well! One of the better tasting peanut puffs there. The skin's crispy but overall not as crunchy as I'd like it to be. The peanut filling's delicious, very cliche but it's full of peanuts! Like a peanut paste. Bite-sized they are, which makes polishing off the bottle an easy peasy feat.

L.E. Cafe Pineapple Tarts

$8.80 for 10 pieces

The lady boss is very proud of her tarts, in fact anything and everything she sells. I have primary school memories of this place..over the years it's blossomed into a cake shop with fine tarts for nearly every occasion. After all the years of patronizing Glory, I jumped ship to L.E. Cafe this year..

I had to try their famous golf ball pineapple tarts..well not "golf" in terms of size, as much as I'd loved to..a bite into it, buttery-melt-in your mouth pastry explains all the pomp the owner has. The best pastry I've ever eaten. The filling is very generous and takes up about 80% of the humble golf ball. Yes, it packs a punch, wonderful! At 88 cents a ball, it's worth every ounce.

Polar Puff Pineapple Tarts
$14.80 for 25 pieces

I was offered a bite by the colleague. The pastry's dry and tasted more like a biscuit. The filling's got an overly sour twang to it..but more bites of it renders it too sweet. We figure the pineapples used were too raw and too much sugar was added to it. Overall, I say...still to the cakes and pies for polar. Not worth the while..from a picky eater's point of view..the worst I eaten.
