ROM Lunch @ Peony Jade

One of my best girlfriends signed her life away on the dotted line and I was one of the lucky few of 3 tables to be invited to share their happiness. Peony Jade's located at Clarke Quay, seemingly a perfect place for ROMs. From it's website, it serves "traditional cantonese and szechuan cuisine", that's quite a mouthful and alot to live up to, considering most restaurants only specialise in either.

There are 3 ROM lunch menus to select from, here's the spread for the day;

Peony-Jade Deluxe Five Combinations 河 畔 五 美 盘

Found this slightly different from the rest of the cold dishes I've eaten. Spicy jellyfish, fried fish cake, octopus, prawn salad fruit basket, venison with green-red peppers, fried whiting fish. Pretty good a start, tasty and the portions were quite big!

Braised Shark’s Fin with Crab Meat 蚧 肉 烩 鱼 翅

One of the best I've eaten, second to Peach Blossoms' CNY Menu. Thick slivers of shark's fin, not one but two generous servings! Biting into the fin exudes pure indulgence (though at the expense of the sharks!), soup was not thick with starch, a nice consistency in fact.

Szechuan Smoked Duck with Camphor Wood & Fragrant Tea Leaves 樟 茶 去 骨 鸭

Interesting dish, the first I've eaten in fact. Nary the camphor wood nor tea leaves in sight. Came with shell shaped mantous. Tasted quite weird eating together as the mantous were sweet. The smokey fragrance somehow did not justify the bland duck meat.

Steamed “Live” Sea Bass with Crispy Soya Bean Crumbs 豆 酥 蒸 金 目鲈

Usual, fresh fish.

Drunken “Live” Prawns 药 膳 醉 酒 虾

This was a star in its own. Steamed fresh, succulent prawns that came with a soup-gravy so good, I couldn't stop drinking! A slight hint of herbs.

Braised Deep Sea Shellfish with Mushrooms 玉 鲍 烩 冬 菇

The shellfish was somewhat lacking in bite, a lil too soft.

Stir-fried Noodle with shredded Meat 港 式 炒 生 面

The first time eating mee-sua kinda noodle at a wedding, normally an Ee-fu noodle dish. Plain and bland. It came in a huge heap but surprisingly could be dished out to manageable portions.

Sweetened Yam Paste with Sweet Corn in Coconut Milk 椰 汁 粟 米 芋 泥

I loved this!! Many thanks to the gf for bearing in mind my love for Orh-nee and having this. :) The smooth yam paste went really well with the pumpkin puree and bore a hint of corn sweetness, sitting prettily in a bowl of coconut milk...I'd say ooohlalaaa. Not too cloying, not too oily..perfect finish.

Another wedding favour, teddy bears this time!

Overall, I'd say restaurant food far surpasses hotel food in terms of taste, maybe because the restaurants specialise in them. One of the better chinese restaurants I've been to. The ambience for ROM is just perfect, cosy...overseeing the Singapore River. Service was pretty good too, hardly you find waitresses that speak in English! The only issue (as with all events) actually is the pacing of the dishes, the beginning of it was slow and ended up rushing the rest.
